Moving around on Barcelona’s buses: a good way to get to know the city

The bus is a good way to get a feel of the city's geography and start familiarising yourself with your new home: learn how to get around in Barcelona on the bus!
A small enough city
Buses are a very nice way to travel around… if you have the time. Luckily, Barcelona is small enough and not prone to too many traffic jams, so if you avoid peak hours and allow for a bit more time than you would need travelling by metro, it is perfectly feasible to get around by bus.

The tickets also allow you to change buses o transfer to the metro for 75 minutes in the same zone. Transportation in Barcelona and its metropolitan area is divided into six zones, and the city itself is in zone 1. You would have to go to Montgat or Castelldefels to change into zone 2 and much further away to get to zone 6.
A very useful crossword
You might have seen (or will see as soon as you get here) many buses which feature a letter before the number on their panel. A V, an H, a D, an X or an A… and also different colours. This crossword has a meaning and a quite useful one at that: they reflect how the buses move.

Barcelona bus lines are H (horizontal, Llobregat-Besòs direction), V (vertical, sea-mountain direction) and D (diagonal route). X are express buses which allow you to go from Francesc Macià to Glòries in 13 minutes, for example. And A are the buses going to the airport. If you need assistance with how the Barcelona bus works, the TMB app is your friend. It will tell you how to get where you want to go and also how long it will take you. It also allows you to buy tickets and to have your bus pass on your smartphone.
