Fall in love with Barcelona

One of the best seasons to get to know the city: discover Barcelona in Autumn!
Caçar bolets
As soon as the leaves start to fall from the trees and the temperature drops a tiny bit, you need to find the nearest forest and learn how to hunt for funghi, or wild mushrooms. We highly recommend having a local expert with you, particularly if you are part of a Barcelona ex-pat group. Funghi are delicious, and hunting for them is kind of a national sport.

The woods in Gavarres, el Montseny, l’Alt Maresme o Collserola are close by and easily accessible by public transport. But let us repeat this: find someone who knows bolets like they know their own family. Otherwise, you might end up with a nasty case of food poisoning!
Shorter days, longer nights
Autumn nights also have a lot to offer in Barcelona. Festivals like Primavera Sound and Cruïlla still program during the autumn and winter, so you can enjoy a good selection of the best music coming to town. If you are a jazz fan, the Barcelona Jazz Festival starts at the beginning of October and ends in mid-December, with around 80 concerts of the best jazz musicians in the world. Whether you are part of the community of ex-pats in Barcelona or already have a group of local friends, this is a great plan to share with them.

And even more music: the film festival Inèdit has been offering the best documentaries about music and musicians created in the past decades. The tickets go fast for this event on the first days of December, so be quick to get them.
Deathly season
The night is the protagonist of the season. Halloween may have conquered nearly any western country, but it still has yet to defeat the castanyada and Day of All Saints. The night of the 31st of October, roast some chestnuts and learn to make panellets, marzipan and pinenut sweets typically eaten the day after to celebrate the Day of All Saints. On the first of November, tradition dictates families visit their dearly departed in their resting places.

You can visit the historical cemeteries of Barcelona on that day and see the amount of flowers people bring in remembrance of those who are not with us anymore. People like Narcís Monturiol, the inventor of the first submarine, the comedy actress Mary Santpere or the modernist architect Enric Sagnier are buried in Poblenou, and the poet Joan Maragall or the father of Barcelona’s Eixample, Ildefons Cerdà, are in Montjuïc. You can also join a guided visit with your ex-pat group of friends in Barcelona any other day of the year to discover the spookiest Barcelona.

There’s so much to do in the city in the Autumn, so don’t miss out on enjoying and experiencing it!
