Living in the past: Barcelona’s Barri Gòtic

The essence of the old Barcelona comes to the surface in the labyrinthic streets of this neighbourhood rich with more than a thousand years of history.
Once upon a time in Gòtic
The origins of the Gòtic can be traced back to the Romans, who Barcelona its name and turned it from a garrison to a proper Imperial city. Their forum –located at the highest point of the town, a meeting point, market, and where administrative buildings could be found– used to be close to what we now know as Plaça Sant Jaume. You can still visit the columns that were part of August’s temple in Carrer Paradís, and a piece of the Roman wall in Plaça de la Catedral.

Although many of the buildings are not really gothic (an architectural style set between the XII-XVI century) but neo-gothic (their façades were refurbished in the XIX century), the history and culture of the millenary Barcelona live in its meandering streets.

Barcelona Gòtic now and then
The Gòtic has been the city's beating heart for centuries, and even Cervantes described it in El Quijote. It is still the home of the City Council and the Catalan Government, the Palau de la Generalitat, in Plaça Sant Jaume. Nowadays, protesters, concertgoers, bar-hopping friends, and families are going to see the traditional Pesebre (Manger) or buy Christmas ornaments… there’s a lot of life in the Gòtic.

If you are looking for peace and quiet, maybe this is not your ideal neighbourhood. If you, on the contrary, are looking for a bustling place to live, full of character and with plenty of things to do just by setting one foot on the street, you might have just found your place in Barcelona. The Gòtic is a street-level history museum out to surprise you at the turn of every corner.

Barcelona Dreaming
There are plenty of fully refurbished flats and buildings in the Gòtic. Staying in century-old buildings but enjoying all the advantages of modern living might be the best Barcelona experience you could ever imagine. If you are looking for an apartment at the Gòtic, try to avoid very busy streets, where tourists roam free trying to take advantage of the few days they have in the city.

Although many buildings don’t have a lift, they can be spacious and even surprisingly bright. You can look at the architectural features, such as wood or ceramic floors, arches in the walls or wood beams. There are also modern buildings in the Gòtic. Built with respect for their architectural environment, they are entirely equipped to have a comfortable contemporary experience of the most historic of Barcelona’s neighbourhoods.

Living in the Gòtic is a way to get to know the past's Barcelona and enjoy this city's essence!
