A park full of magic: La Ciutadella

Barcelona is known for the beach and not so much for its parks, which, to be fair, are scarce in number. Let’s dive into the history of one of the most iconic ones and discover La Ciutadella as a local.
A historical site
The Ciutadella is the oldest park in Barcelona, and it was designed to be an area of leisure for citizens. Before, however, in the space now occupied by the Parc de la Ciutadella, there was a military fortress, the Citadel, built in the time of King Philip V (1715). This construction formed a fundamental part of the city's defensive system.

In 1869, General Prim ordered the land's return to the city. In 1872, the master builder Josep Fontseré was commissioned to carry out the project to transform this space.

The park also has extensive landscaped areas and leafy groves where you can see several hundred-year-old trees included in the Barcelona Catalogue of Trees of Local Interest.
